A CHARMing Experience

by Melinda Medley

Melinda Medley is an ECE teacher at Bates Elementary. Anglette Braden at Bates Elementary counselor.

Anglette Braden and I started the CHARM Club at Bates Elementary 6 weeks ago. CHARM stands file5-1for Classy, Happy, Amazing, Respectful and Motivational and is open to any fourth- or fifth-grade girl. The vision of this club was to empower the young ladies of the group.

The CHARM Club meets weekly for one hour. We bring in outside speakers and have in-depth talks about manners, etiquette, and fashion.  In the weeks before the Kentucky Derby, members designed and made their own fascinators. We are wrapping up the school year by hosting a CHARM “formal” tea with finger foods and a filesmall fashion show for the girls’ parents.   Seeing the girls having so much fun and blossoming through this experience has been very rewarding. We plan to continue the group next year and increase the number of girls we serve.

Principal Alecia Dunn said of CHARM, “I am very excited about the opportunity for our fourth and fifth-grade girls to be a part of CHARM.  Our fabulous volunteers are focusingfile2.png on social skills and positive self-image with these girls while having fun working together and building relationships along the way.” #positivecultureandclimate
